More information on Intel's upcoming CPU generation, code-named Penryn has started to emerge on internal memos corroborated by reports posted on the Internet.
The Penryn generation will include server, desktop and mobile processors and will feature a faster front-side bus and 45nm engraving allowing a better performance per watt ratio and unpreceded performance on the high-end.
The Xeon chips, which are intended to servers and high-end desktops (such as Apple's Xserves and Mac Pros) will be clocked at up to 3.16Ghz with a 1.33Ghz front side bus speed in Dual and Quad core configurations which will also include 6MB of cache.
The Core 2 Duo chips, which target desktops and notebooks will use the 800Mhz front side bus but will include 6MB of L2 cache. The clock speed will vary from 2.1Ghz to 2.6Ghz while the Extreme Edition will reach 2.8Ghz.
Meanwhile Intel announced greater than expected financial results for this quarter as well as good guidance for the following ones.
